One area that Vigo County is rich in is local museums. There are the History Center, Children's Museum, Debs Museum, Candles Holocaust, Swope Art Gallery, and so on. The most recent addition to that list is the Larry Bird Museum, connected to the Convention Center on Wabash Avenue.
The last class of CEO for the school year included a visit to the Larry Bird Museum. Larry Bird has many monikers like the Hick from French Lick or Larry the Legend. But, when someone is out of town and mentions Terre Haute, "that's where Larry Bird played basketball" is often the response. Larry Bird had a basketball career for several decades, but the years that ignited it all were his college days in Terre Haute.
The museum opened May 30, 2024. Hours of operation are Wednesday through Sunday, starting at 10:00 AM.
When Larry was approached about a museum in Terre Haute, he made it contingent on it being free to the public. Tennille Wanner, General Manager of the Convention Center, acted as docent to the CEO student visit to the museum. Tennille pointed out that Bird wanted to show that you don't have to come from money to make something of yourself. An 8-minute video is the center-most exhibit featuring the coaches and players whom Bird encountered. Each agreed that his work ethic and talent were unmatched.
GOAT, Greatest Of All Time, is another name he is known by.
Bird's basketball career spanned from Springs Valley High School, IU, Indiana State, the Boston Celtics, to the Indianapolis Pacers. All are highlighted throughout the museum that CEO visited.
