When Austen Leake picked up a camera as a 20-year-old Indiana State University student, two weeks later he knew being a photographer was what he wanted to do the rest of his life.
Today, Austen serves as the Director of Communications of the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce. Using a camera is just one of his roles at the Chamber.
Austen's initial plan after graduation was to join the Marine Corp and work for the "Stars and Stripes" newspaper. That plan changed. His path went on to included college, driving for Jimmy Johns, photojournalism at the "Tribune Star" newspaper, and other positions in between. In his current role at the Chamber, he enjoys being the "jack of all trades."
Austen shared that as part of the Chamber team, he enjoys brainstorming with his colleagues.
"In brainstorming, there is no judgment," Austen shared. Even the most far out, unlikely idea may awaken a good idea from someone else, he said. "Just throw ideas against the wall and see what sticks."
Austen had several suggestions and ideas for students as they navigate their class business plan. His experience with community events brought many marketing, networking, partnering, and designing ideas to the discussion of the next business.
