A sign in Mark and Tiffany Baker's home reads "Bloom where you're planted."
If you know the Bakers, you understand that they plant their work life intentionally--anywhere in the world they want to travel.
Mark and Tiffany both grew up and were educated in Vigo County. Their real education, however, came after graduation.
Mark shared that he and Tiffany felt pushed into the mold to do the ordinary--graduate, get married, buy a house and car, and have a family. After starting down that track, both decided that wasn't the path for them. So they quit their jobs. That eventually led them down the path to their business--3 Sisters Investments.
Following the FIRE Movement (Financial Independence Retire Early) and Dave Ramsey's debt-free living, Mark and Tiffany developed three rules they still follow today:
1. Be frugal
2. Stay curious
3. Be time rich
Mark's friends and family often joked about his using a flip phone when everyone else had an expensive iPhone. And, he paid with cash rather than credit. He and Tiffany chose to rent for several years because it put them in the places they wanted to be. These choices allowed them to save money and not be tied to debt.
Tiffany also explained how entrepreneurs are naturally curious. She said that curiosity makes you see things and notice opportunities--everywhere you go. The key then is to ACT. "Twenty minutes of doing something is better than 20 hours of thinking about something," she shared.
Finally, the Bakers said that they focus on acquisition of assets not liabilities. They view money as a tool, and chase assets that can make them money (rather than cost them money). They feel "time rich" because they can do more of what they want with their children.
In fact, Tiffany uses social media to share how their family spends time wisely. Their Instagram and Facebook pages are called atimerichfamily and Time Rich Family. She encouraged CEO students to use social media intentionally. "There are reasons to be on social media," she said. "To educate, entertain, and inform." She uses it to create content, tell a story and share a process, she said.
