Community School of the Arts (CSA) is a non-credit educational program offered on the ISU campus in Terre Haute. It is open to ages 5-105, Emily Bennett shared with CEO. Emily is the program coordinator for the classes, private lessons, and summer camp for young people.
Emily explained that not only does she hire the professional artists, musicians, and theater instructors, she hires the staff who works with campers during the summer. Emily allowed CEO to sample some of the crafts that would be done with young students--painting and jewelry making. She also taught how to use a rug tufting machine gun to create a rug.
Emily is an entrepreneur herself. Her business Emily Bennett Studio is her individual business where she creates and sells her own fiber art. Emily has artwork hanging throughout Terre Haute, in businesses as well as private homes. She spins her own yarn (which she sells as well), sometimes creates her own looms with repurposed frames, and packages projects customers can use to weave their own art.
Emily shared with CEO that as program director at CSA, she may not always look for artists who are the BEST in their field. She also looks for someone who can work with people, who can help others discuss and learn. She knows not everyone has that ability.
CEO students have worked for CSA in the past. Emily said she appreciates the skills that they bring to camp because they are dependable and personable--the employability skills CSA looks for.
Emily encouraged CEO students to get some business skills and take some business classes, so they can use them in whatever they do. She wished she had. It would have made her personal business easier. She's had to learn along the way.
Life-long learning is emphasized in the CEO program.
